What is platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP)?
Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) is a type of regenerative medicine for people with chronic pain. This type of treatment uses concentrated platelets from your own blood in order to promote healing and new growth of tissues in the injured site. Platelets are a type of blood cell that contains growth factors that are responsible for healing the damaged tissue and generates new and healthy tissue.
This treatment is a short and minimally invasive procedure, has been shown to be effective in treating chronic pain, and is cost-effective in the long run. It is also a great alternative to taking addictive drugs, such as narcotics, for pain control. Additionally, since PRP uses your own blood, there is no-risk for transmitted blood-injections and adverse reactions are rare.
Who is a candidate for PRP?
PRP therapy is typically for people who have musculoskeletal injuries that have failed to heal despite traditional treatment options. Musculoskeletal injuries include:
Partial ligament tears
Small rotator cuff tear
